Sushma Kumar

I am originally from India, and London has been my home for many years. I began my journey in foster care in 2002. Over the past twenty-four years, I have supported individuals across different genders, ages, castes, and cultural backgrounds.

My vision has always been to care for people in a way that makes them feel truly welcomed, safe, and loved, while gently guiding them towards independence and growth. No matter where someone comes from, I have always made it a priority to celebrate the festivals and cultures of every individual in my care, because feeling seen and respected matters deeply.

This career has shaped me into a more empathetic and capable person, while also helping me build strong professional skills. Alongside my hands-on work, I also served as a director of an experienced foster care company for six years, which strengthened my leadership and understanding of the sector.

Dreams Beyond Horizon is a new beginning for me. Through it, I hope to continue fostering individuals while also learning how much people can truly achieve when they are given the right guidance and support.

Fatima Magsi

I have been in care with Sushma for about four to five years. During this time, I can confidently say I would not be where I am today without Aunty’s guidance and wisdom. She taught me how to stay safe as a teenager and helped me understand saving and lending when I started my first job, especially at a time when no one really believed in me.

Today, I am living in a clean and stable home, working in a bank, and have some savings to my name. I truly believe that having a loving foster mum was at the heart of my achievements. She never did this just for the money. She did it with real care and genuine humanity, and that is why I am still in touch with her today.

I was with Sushma Aunty for 10 years as a young child. Sushma Auntie became a true mother to me, doing everything a mother would do with so much love and patience. She taught me how to clean, cook, and take care of a home. More importantly, she taught me how to take care of myself and believe in my future.

She always gave her best, constantly stressing the importance of studying and encouraging me to become something in life. Because of her, I learned the essential household and life skills that shaped who I am today. Now, as a happily married mother of two and a working mum, I carry her lessons with me every single day, deeply grateful for the strong foundation she gave me. I am who I am today because of her.

Preeti Roopra

I was placed in my first foster home at 11, and Sushma cared for me for nearly two years. During this time, my mother sadly passed away, making it one of the hardest periods of my childhood.

As my first foster carer, Sushma gave me immense love, reassurance, and stability when I needed it most. She and her daughter made me feel safe, valued, and truly at home. She went above and beyond by building strong ties with my extended family, creating a comforting bedroom for me, and even fulfilling my dream of having a four-poster princess bed. She also made sure I had everything I needed to focus on school.

Sushma became like a second mother, patiently teaching me important life skills and giving me a warm, happy home where I could begin to heal. She also took me on my first two-week Europe trip to France, Italy, and Germany, a memory I will always cherish.

Today, I am married with a little boy of my own, and I carry her love and lessons into my own family. I will always be deeply grateful for everything she did for me.
